Telegram is a messenger created by Pavel Durov, allowing you to exchange personal messages and media files. One of the key advantages over other messengers was the possibility of working with bots and channels. Channels have become analogues of microblogging and are actively used to deliver various kinds of content to the target audience.

The number of monthly active users of the service, as of the end of September 2018, is more than 230 million people. The number of messenger users is growing daily by more than 700 thousand people.

One of the reasons for such high popularity is its security. In 2011, Pavel Durov, after one of the searches at his apartment, realized that there was no application in the world through which he could send messages and not be afraid that they would be intercepted and read by the special services. The data transfer protocol is based on the proprietary protocol MTProto, developed by Paul’s brother Nicholas. Initially, it was an experiment to test MTProto at high loads, in the company owned by Pavel Digital Fortress.

Already in 2013, a client for iOS appeared.

On March 20, 2018, the Supreme Court of Russia recognized the legal requirement of the FSB to provide keys for decrypting the correspondence to Telegrams. In turn, Pavel Durov repeatedly stated that he could not physically provide keys for decrypting messages, since they are not stored on the servers of the service. On the same day, Roskomnadzor notified Telegram of the need to fulfill the requirements of the law and if Telegram did not provide encryption keys within 15 days, the messenger would be blocked in Russia.

Currently, this messenger is blocked in a number of countries (besides Russia). This must be taken into account when conducting SMM campaigns.
